5G Broadcast Receiver Standards

XGen Network (XGN) is pleased to present a working version of a 5G Broadcast receiver profile which is needed now. It is a work in progress so is meant to be modified as needed. As we are well aware, 5G Broadcast is still in its infancy and new technological advances are being made with lightning speed. We must start somewhere, so XGN started the ball rolling, so we have a document to share with OEM’s.

The key requirements for 4G-LTE receivers as published by XGN are:

  • eMBMS enabled

  • Android 13+

  • Band 108 (470 MHz – 698 MHz)

  • Antennas optimized for band 108

  • Network supported GSM/CDMA/LTE/5G

  • Application Privileges: Sideloaded APK installation allowed

XGN applauds the European 5G Broadcast handset task force for their diligence in developing a written minimum standard for handsets. With 5G Broadcast being a part of 3gpp, XGN strongly recommends that all suggestions for 5G Broadcast be worldwide, not regionally specific. Regionally specific requirements, be it with receivers or any other part of the 5G Broadcast chain, sets up a potentially damaging precedent for various regions around the world requesting standards geared for their region and not the world. This is particularly important when addressing emergency alerts. The European 5G Broadcast handset taskforce, gathering EBU and BNE members, has published a working version of a 5G Broadcast receiver profile for use by companies within the broadcast ecosystem that are preparing for a roll-out of 5G Broadcast services. The receiver profile is for the introduction of smartphones with 5G Broadcast reception functionality. XGN has respectfully edited the proposed minimum requirements to conform to worldwide standards.
