World’s first 5G broadcasts successfully demonstratedWWOO-LD

WWOO-LD, a Boston-based LPTV station, has successfully demonstrated the world’s first 5G broadcasts on September 13th. The proof of concept included a 1080p programming stream from France24 and tests of emergency alert services. This achievement marks a significant milestone in broadcast technology, as the station takes a small step towards a potentially big breakthrough.
The demonstration was made possible after WWOO-LD filed for an experimental license with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) on June 12th. Following the provision of a provisional license, the station was able to test their 5G broadcast system. FCC Commissioner Nathan Simington commended the station’s efforts, emphasizing the changing media landscape and broadcasters’ evolving role in delivering content.
Lorenzo Casaccia, VP of Technical Standards & Intellectual Property at Qualcomm, highlighted the readiness of 5G broadcast technology, also known as enhanced TV, for mainstream adoption. He emphasized the business opportunities and benefits it brings to both broadcasters and consumers. With 5G broadcast, users can access linear TV on their smartphones, enabling them to watch live sports games and receive timely public safety information without requiring a SIM card.
During the demonstration, Andrew Tao from XGN showcased the reception of the France24 feed using an antenna and set-top box. The 1080p picture quality was laudedFrank Copsidas, Founder of the Low Power TV Broadcasters Association (LPTVBA) and XGen Network, remarking that it demonstrated the potential of 5G broadcasting even in its early stages.
The equipment used for the demonstration, including the transmitter providedRohde & Schwarz, was highlighted in a video tour of the station. The successful implementation of 5G broadcastsWWOO-LD opens up new possibilities for the broadcasting community and paves the way for a potential evolution in the future of broadcast technology.
