5G Broadcasting: Direct to Mobile
ATSC 3.0 compliments 5G Broadcast.
Interleaving of the two protocols is not promising at this time. Brazil has stated they will use TV 3.0 (which has some ATSC 3.0 facets) for delivery of television to homes AND 5G Broadcast for delivery to smartphones.
Full power broadcast stations have developed ATSC 3.0 knowing how it can truly benefit their viewers and advertisers by providing 4k and even 8k pictures paired with Dolby sound. It is a difficult deployment and well suited to facilities with a full time engineering staff.
LPTV (UHF up to 15kw) is suited to 5G for its simple deployment and not causing same channel interference issues with unlimited SFN’s as would a high power, tall tower full power station. Further it can serve the public interest with programming received directly on their smartphone or tablet as well as their television and first responder solutions on existing equipment.
With 15 years of development, ATSC 3.0 can deliver higher throughput in certain cases. With 2 years of true development, 5G Broadcast is a very stable platform in the 4gLTE world and will explode in capacity with true 5G.
